It’s devastating that some of us won’t be able to visit our Mums and maternal figures this Mothers Day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make her day special. To celebrate our love for mums everywhere, we have put together a few gift ideas and things you can do to put a big smile on her face!

History of Mothers Day

Mother’s Day, or Mothering Sunday in the UK and Ireland, is a day to show love, gratitude and appreciation to all wonderful mums everywhere, through acts of kindness and the giving of Mothers Day gifts and flowers. Mothering Sunday and Mother’s Day both have different origins; although they represent the same meaning, they originated very differently. We all celebrate the day but very few people actually know its origin. The original meaning of Mothering Sunday and Mother’s Day has been somewhat lost but it’s still a day to solely appreciate mum.
Mother’s Day celebrations date back as far as the ancient Greeks where they would celebrate Rhea, the Mother of the Gods and Goddesses, every spring with festivals of worship. The Romans also celebrated a mother Goddess, Cybele, every March as far back as 250BC.

Mothering Sunday has been celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent, in the UK and Ireland, since the 16th century. The date varies in other parts of the world. Many countries follow the US and celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May, whilst other countries enjoy the day on March 8th which is International Women’s Day.
The coronavirus pandemic has caused us all to adapt and find creative new ways to spend quality time together. And unfortunately, Mother’s Day is no exception.

Although you can’t be in the same room doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate. Here are some ideas that allow you to treat your mum without ever leaving the house. There is myriad activities you and your mum love to do when you’re together that are actually possible online or virtually.

Send a card or a handwritten note

While gifts go a long way toward showing someone you care, putting your feelings into words takes things that much further.

Video family messages

If you have siblings have them send you a video message wishing her the best day and compile them all into one huge video you can send her on Mother’s Day morning! She can watch it over and over, as many times as she likes.

Send Her Flowers

This might seem like the most obvious no-contact way you can show your mom you care, but fresh flowers really do make a wonderful gift. Plus, if your mom is stuck inside, having something cheery and bright in the house will instantly brighten her day.

Have a Spa night/send a pampering basket

Send her a basket of pampering gifts, like skincare products, oils, bath salts, body exfoliant, body creams and candles, and enjoy a spa night virtually together. To make your gift basket feel as special as possible, I think it’s super important to keep the recipient in mind when picking out your items.

Firstly set the scene, light candles to give a calm atmosphere with calming relaxation music. Your mother and you can polish your skin followed by a face massage with one of our aromatherapy oils from our beauty salon in Marylebone, the aroma which is uplifting to your mood and pampering to the skin, most importantly spending the time together. This can be followed by the Detox Mud Mask and a soak in the bath if you both feel comfortable, it’s all about spending quality time together.

This isn’t just for mother and daughters, sons can participate too you’ll be surprised how much you might enjoy it.

Share a lovely meal

Even though we can’t go out to restaurants right now, you can still share a special meal with the special woman in your life. You could order their favourite meal via takeout meal delivery service or if you live with or near them, drop off their favourite homemade dish and maybe some table decor as well. Then, on Mother’s Day, you could eat together in person if you’re in the same household or eat together virtually via video call or on the phone together.

Throw a surprise Zoom party

If you couldn’t be at home with your family for Mother’s Day, fret not. With most of us quarantined in our homes, throwing a party or throwing a get-together for your mom couldn’t have been possible anyway. But we can always make a party happen through technology, can’t we?

With a little bit of time management, you can get your mom and your entire family together on a Zoom call and have a party. From playing card games to acting out your favourite films in charades or have a sing-along on karaoke. My mother loves her dancing!!
